Insect communication is extraordinarily diverse, employing a wide range of strategies—from chemical signals and vibrations to sounds and visual displays. Insects thus represent a valuable source of inspiration for new technologies, methods of information transfer, and a deeper understanding of social systems.
Come and explore various species and developmental stages of live insects! You will see truly large representatives of insects that you can hold in your hand and experience how stick insects respond to touch. Some of them have even developed chemical defenses, allowing them to spray a potential predator with an irritating, foul-smelling liquid—this too is a form of communication, serving as a warning to enemies.
Would you like to learn more about silkworms and their chemical communication? Are you interested in research on bees and their complex communication through dances or pheromones? Have you ever seen the Varroa mite, which causes varroosis? Have you ever heard how cockroaches communicate? Large Madagascar cockroaches can hiss and communicate within their group about potential danger, and males and females also use this to communicate with each other.
We look forward to seeing you in D36/212.
