Lecture

You probably know mitochondria as the ‘powerhouses of the cell’ – the organelles that which convert energy within our cells. Few people realise, however, that they were originally bacteria. Before they became obedient components of the cell, they were uninvited intruders. And so, a parasite became the central power station. It’s almost a perfect illustration of the saying about putting the fox in charge of the henhouse. And that is precisely why it requires strict control and clear communication. How does the cell communicate with its power station? What happens when the agreement breaks down? We’ll explore this in our lecture.

The Institute of Physiology of the Czech Academy of Sciences is one of the pillars of biomedical research in the Czech Republic. We study how the human body works in health and in disease — from the brain and nervous system through the heart and blood vessels to the complex processes of metabolism. Our aim is to understand the fundamental biological mechanisms behind serious diseases such as strokes and vascular events, ischaemic heart disease, obesity, diabetes, inherited metabolic disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. We uncover the causes of their development and open the way to new possibilities for prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Come and see how science with a real impact on human health is made.
