In this lecture, we will explore how the brain creates an image of the world from the retina's activity. We will show that vision does not follow just one pathway in the brain: there are two main visual streams. One helps us recognise what we see (an object, a face, a scene), while the other concerns where things are, how they move, and how we can manipulate them (position, movement, orientation). These streams do not work in isolation; they constantly communicate with each other and also engage memory, for example, when we recognise familiar places. We will examine how the activity of brain areas can be measured and discuss results from experiments using unique data obtained from electrodes implanted directly into the human brain.

Speaker: Mgr. Kamil Vlček, Ph.D., Institute of Physiology, Czech Academy of Sciences
Kamil Vlček is a graduate of the Faculty of Science at Charles University and the doctoral program in neuroscience at the First Faculty of Medicine at Charles University. He is a researcher in the Laboratory of Neurophysiology of Memory and focuses on human visual perception and spatial navigation and their neural basis. At Researchers' Night, he coordinates the interactive portion of the Memory Park program. He teaches cognitive neuroscience at the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Arts, Charles Univcersity.
The Institute of Physiology of the Czech Academy of Sciences is one of the pillars of biomedical research in the Czech Republic. We study how the human body works in health and in disease - from the brain and nervous system through the heart and blood vessels to the complex processes of metabolism. Our aim is to understand the fundamental biological mechanisms behind serious diseases such as strokes and vascular events, ischaemic heart disease, obesity, diabetes, inherited metabolic disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. We uncover the causes of their development and open the way to new possibilities for prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Come and see how science with a real impact on human health is made.
